The social medias
I have been an intermittent listener to the excellent podcast Doomscroll for a year or two; about 1/3 to 1/2 of it is (usually self-aware) Marxist circlejerking, but the rest is often insightful.
One of the things mentioned on the episode I listened to today, while switching out my summer and winter clothing, is the thought that social media was "purposefully designed" to liquidate liberal (originally stated as Leftist, but I am choosing to substitute) institutions/power structures. All the current big social platforms are, at surface level, about democratization, but they have very effectively become methods of guiding our social lives along pre-determined paths for exploitation, whether that be for monetization or suppression.
Something I think about often, which happens to be from the incredible game Disco Elysium, is that "Capital has the ability to subsume all critiques into itself. Even those who critique capital end up reinforcing it instead." The thought about social media reminded me of this; I don't know a way to change the landscape without re-creating it.
I should add: yes I have a Fediverse account. Two, actually, on different platforms, and both of them suck for interacting with the people I actually want to talk to. I even tried nostr! Nothing has the juice of a well-monetized Big Tech platform, and I don't think that there is any escape from that fact.
